The writing competition is part of a PhD research project at Keele University and is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The research explores how young people view and make sense of social media. How you choose to write about social media in your story will help adults see it from your point of view. That understanding can help us find new (and hopefully better!) ways for people - like teachers, researchers, and people in government - to talk about social media and make decisions about it.

By writing a story, you’ll not only have the chance to win a prize, but you’ll also help adults better understand how young people see the digital world.

You don’t have to take part in the research to enter the competition. When you submit your story, you’ll be asked to confirm if your story can be used in the research. If you click “no”, your story won’t be included in the research, and you’ll still have the same chance of winning a prize.

Some of the ideas or themes from your story may be used in the research - but only if you give permission. If you agree for your story to be included in the research, your story, or parts of it, might be quoted or summarised in research publications (like books or articles), or in presentations to show how young people imagine and describe social media. If your story is used, it will be completely anonymised. That means your name and any personal details will not appear anywhere in the research. Your personal data will always be kept confidential, and both the competition and the research follow strict data protection rules under GDPR.
